There were two major winners at the WGA Awards on Sunday, with Daniel Kwan's original screenplay and Daniel Scheinert's adaptation taking home the top prizes. Apple TV+'s Severance won drama series and new series awards from the WGA, and FX's The Bear won the comedy series with the award.

In addition to awards for best writing, the WGA also handed out awards for best writing in Los Angeles and New York. HBO's The White Lotus won in the Limited Series category, while in the Comedy Variety Talk Series category, Last Week Tonight won.

The sadness of being considered

With the Spirit Award, Everything Everywhere completed its sweep of the major guild awards, adding to triumphs at the PGA, DGA and SAG awards and a nomination for original screenplay at the Oscars.

WGA rules prevented the scripts for The Banshees of Inisherin and Triangle of Sadness from being considered tonight for Best Picture and Original Screenplay at the Oscars and the Academy's Adapted nominees Living and All Quiet on the Western Front.

Agreements collectively bargained

There are similar exclusions yearly because films eligible for inclusion in the guild must have been created under a bona fide collective-bargaining agreement from one of the WGA's affiliated international organizations.

The USC Scripter Awards victory, which Polley's Women Talking took on Saturday night, helped establish its frontrunner status for the Oscars, competing against All Quiet Living, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Top Gun: Maverick.

A negotiation will be initiated

As the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers prepares to negotiate a new contract, the WGA Awards come amid speculation about possible writers' strikes. Negotiations will begin on March 20, and the current three-year contract runs out on May 1.

Michelle Buteau and Janelle James hosted the Los Angeles and New York events, recognizing outstanding writing in film, television, new media, broadcast, digital news and radio-audio promotion.
