Guardians of the Galaxy

'Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special' has Kevin Bacon in action.

This famous hero has long been the subject of legends, and today, for the first time ever, we're actually meeting him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: say hello to actor Kevin Bacon.

Marvel Studios' Special Presentation

In the latest Marvel Studios' Special Presentation, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the long-standing, iconic actor makes his MCU debut as himself. Mantis decides in the special that she wants to give Peter Quill the nicest gift ever, and what could be better than giving Peter his favourite person in the galaxy? A scheme is devised to fly to Earth, locate Kevin Bacon in Hollywood, and bring him back to Knowhere for the holiday celebration. Isn't it true that fruitcake brings peace?

Peter's enthusiasm for the one and only Kevin Bacon is nothing new for MCU fans, as he has been highlighted previously, most notably in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, in which Peter deems Bacon "a tremendous hero" for saving the day through dancing (something Peter than does to stop Ronan ten, Accuser). Back in 2014, when the film was initially released, Bacon was unaware that Star-Lord would mention him.

Bacon and MCU

"I went to Guardians on opening weekend by myself and had no idea what to expect," Bacon told Marvel.com. "If you can image sitting there and hearing Peter start to talk about you when you're already immersed in this movie, it's a fairly out-of-body experience."

Bacon called his wife as he left the theatre to recommend that she watch the film. "I said, 'There's a small surprise in it, but I won't tell you what it is,' but I didn't elaborate." It's just one of those situations when you think, "My life can be quite peculiar at times."

And now Bacon himself is a part of the broader MCU, having featured as himself in The Holiday Special.

Becoming the Favourite MCU character

Kevin Bacon is the "favourite MCU character" of returning Guardians writer and director James Gunn, who joked that if Bacon does not become an Avenger in the future, he will be "very upset because he should be."

Gunn tells Marvel.com with a chuckle, "When I started scripting this and I knew that they were going to try to obtain one of Peter Quill's heroes as a present, Kevin Bacon was the first person I thought of and the one that's been discussed the most." "This was an advantage of [the special] from the very beginning. I called Kevin and asked, "Would you like to do this stupid thing?" And he just smiles and admits that it was amazing."

Bacon agreed to star in the film without even reading the script since he had previously collaborated with Gunn on another film and knew that whatever it was, it would be "fun and cool."

"When James contacted me about the Holiday Special, I can't recall if he mentioned I would be playing myself or not, but I didn't even need to read the screenplay. I immediately replied yes, I'm in, no questions asked."

James and Pom Klementieff

In conversation with Pom Klementieff, who reprises her role as Mantis, he joked that kidnapping Kevin Bacon in the Guardians universe was "awesome."

"Having Kevin Bacon as Kevin Bacon is the funniest thing because, in Drax and Mantis' universe, it has little significance. They are unsure of [his identity on Earth]. Kevin informed us he had a great time working on this film because he hasn't done many comedies before. It was also something new for him, and he is a pleasure to work with."

The shooting was fun

Mantis is also the first to recognise that Kevin Bacon is not the true hero Peter has been raving about, but rather an actor, which disgusts the entire team of Guardians. "I had so much fun filming the scenes, and I thought it was so amusing because, in real life, performers sometimes take themselves so seriously that it's wonderful to poke fun at that."

Fortunately, the Guardians and Kevin Bacon have a happy ending, and he spends a lovely holiday with them before returning to Earth. And his parting remark to the galactic saviours, "See you at Easter," further strengthens the fact that he is now a member of the Guardians family and is up for more impending festivities.
