Martin Henderson says Season Five of Virgin River is the best yet

The Vancouver set of Virgin River season five has just finished filming Martin Henderson's first two scenes when he jumps on a Zoom. There's one more scene for him to perform today with Alexandra Breckenridge, but he's already breathing a sigh of relief.

It took me 12 hours to fall asleep last night," he says. It doesn't even matter that I have been an actor for 34 years. Even though this is season five of a show that's working, there is some part of me that wonders if I can pull it off.

Despite this, I believe that I looked appropriately sad at the appropriate moments and appropriately happy at others. My job is still there, so I guess I'm okay."

Henderson's portrayal of military vet/bar owner Jack Sheridan is beloved by viewers for its combination of humility and humor. Henderson asks if I had seen season five before our interview (the day before the new season premiered) when I mention I'd already binge-watched all 12 episodes of season four.

Because he has only filmed two scenes so far, I chalk it up to his sleep deprivation and tell him that would be pretty impressive if I had witnessed it. He replied, "Season five is great.". There are no better seasons than this one. This is a great role for me."

Fans of the show who have seen season four can attest to Henderson's outstanding performances in the role, particularly at a time when Jack's professional and personal worlds are crumbling.

Additionally, there is the very real financial burden of supporting two unborn children with his ex-sorta-girlfriend (more on that in a minute) and raising a child with the love of his life who might not be expecting him, as well as PTSD from his time in the Marines and guilt related to his younger brother's death.

As for the fact that he tries to be a hero to the entire Virgin River community, that's another plus. Amazingly, he's still standing.

Afterward, he finds out that his ex-sorta girlfriend lied to him all along and he is not their father. This show's ending has never been more shocking.

Despite being sleep deprived, Henderson (or "Hendo," his nickname, which also appears on his Zoom screen) graciously answered every question regarding paternity issues, Char's comeuppance, and the gorgeous engagement scene.
