Recognition in Star Wars

Following the events of The Last Jedi, the abandoned Force link between Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren—originally planned for The Rise of Skywalker—has finally been officially recognized in the Star Wars universe.

Marvel's Star Wars comic book series

While Luke Skywalker's final remarks to Kylo Ren after their "duel" on Crait and Luke's subsequent death appeared to promise a reunion from beyond the dead, the mentor and apprentice were never seen together again on screen.

But this idea has now become canon according to the most recent issue of Marvel's Star Wars comic book series (albeit with a different execution).

Resistance

At the end of The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker used the Force to project his likeness from Ahch-To to the planet Crait, where it kept Kylo Ren and the First Order off balance long enough for Rey to save the Resistance.

Force ghost

Luke did, however, say one last thing to his old pupil before he vanished and passed away (having used all of his power): "See you around, kid." This not only hinted that Luke would meet the new Supreme Leader in The Rise of Skywalker, but it also expressed his assurance that he would turn into a Force ghost.

Didn't Confront

Luke didn't confront Kylo Ren in the closing act of the Skywalker saga, despite becoming a Force ghost and speaking with Rey.

Star Wars# 25

However, Charles Soule and Will Sliney's "See You Around, Kid" short story is in the most recent issue of Star Wars # 25. The Supreme Leader, played by Kylo Ren, is seen touring the galaxy with the First Order and his Knights of Ren in search of a specific object (or person).

Looking for a ghost

When Kylo and his forces return to Crait and discover nothing there, they travel to an old Jedi Temple on Elphrona and the ruins of Luke's former temple, where he had previously trained Kylo as Ben Solo along with a number of other pupils.

It is revealed that Kylo Ren has become exceedingly paranoid in his idea that Luke is truly watching him from the great beyond, despite his claims that he is looking for a ghost.

Meeting Old Master

It seems sensible that Skywalker was indeed keeping an eye on Kylo after he passed away. Even though Luke doesn't physically appear in this scenario, Kylo Ren undoubtedly finds that to be more upsetting than really meeting his old master.

Final Star War Movie

Furthermore, a major narrative aspect in Colin Trevorrow's leaked script for the final Star Wars movie, Duel of the Fates, called for Luke to effectively haunt Kylo Ren in The Rise of Skywalker.

Concept art for Trevorrow's script also supported Luke and Kylo's abandoned Force connection. But this was all before J.J. Abrams took over for Lucasfilm and turned out Rise of Skywalker, which had a completely different script.
