The Overview of the Series

The series is set in the imaginary town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, which has a haunted past. It follows Elena Gilbert-(Nina Dobrev), a young girl who has just lost her parents in a car mishap, as she falls in love with Stefan Salvatore, a 162-year-old vampire (Paul Wesley). As Stefan's enigmatic elder brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) reappears with a plan to bring back their prior love Katherine Pierce (also played by Dobrev), a vampire who looks just like Elena, their connection becomes increasingly difficult.

Although Damon initially resents his brother for pushing him to become a vampire, he eventually reconciles with Stefan. He falls in love with Elena, creating a love triangle between the three. As they fight many antagonists and threats to their community, including Katherine, both brothers seek to defend Elena. As the series progresses, flashbacks explain the brothers' history and the village's mythology.

Why Did “The Vampire Diaries” Leave Netflix

In a nutshell, the licensing opportunity has closed. When Netflix first introduced the streaming format, they were the only game in town, securing exclusive streaming rights to many beloved titles from multiple networks.

Since then, the streaming wars have rapidly evolved, with parent corporations launching their streaming services and regaining their hit shows from rivals like Netflix and Hulu. That's why Netflix has lost mega-hits like "The Office" (now available on Peacock) and "Friends" (now available on HBO Max) - and why it's on the verge of losing many more, including "The Vampire Diaries."

Netflix and The CW first signed an exclusive streaming agreement in 2011, which was renewed in 2016 and will expire in 2019, so anticipate plenty more The CW favorites to leave Netflix in the future.

We've known for a while that The Vampire Diaries is leaving Netflix, but a removal notice indicates that all eight seasons will leave in September 2022, but just in the United States. The following is the projected timing for The Vampire Diaries' withdrawal from Netflix.

The popular teen supernatural series developed a huge universe and ran for eight seasons on the US TV network The CW. The show has been on our screens for years and is available on Netflix in many places.

As of August 2022, six Netflix locations continue to watch The Vampire Diaries, including:

Netflix Australia

Netflix India

Netflix Italy

Netflix United Kingdom

Netflix United States

However, as Warner Bros. Television continues to reclaim its shows from streaming services such as Netflix, The Vampire Diaries will eventually depart Netflix for HBO Max.

The Vampire Diaries will depart Netflix in the United States in September 2022. The Vampire Diaries will end its run on Netflix in September 2022.

The Vampire Diaries was originally scheduled to exit Netflix in March 2022, exactly five years after the final season was released. On this timeline, we've seen all The CW properties licensed to Netflix exit, but we learned in February that this would not be the case.

Even stranger, we recently learned that The Originals would be departing Netflix on July 1st, 2022. That is over a year earlier than we anticipated (5 years after the final season, in this instance, was in August 2023).

In June, we received information indicating that The Vampire Diaries would be canceled on September 4th, 2022. Now that we're in October, that's been confirmed, with an expiry date now appearing on The Vampire Diaries in the United States. According to the expiry notification, your "last day to view on Netflix" was September 3rd, with the show being withdrawn at midnight on September 4th.
