Produced by Jeff Tremaine, Spike Jonze, and Johnny Knoxville, Jackass is an American reality comedy series. Three short seasons of the show aired on MTV from October 2000 to August 2001, with repeats continuing into 2002. There were nine people on the show, and they all played pranks on each other and the audience. Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Ryan Dunn, Steve-O, Jason "Wee Man" Acua, Ehren McGhehey, and Preston Lacy were all featured in the cast.

The programme sparked debate due to concerns that it promoted risky behaviour and immorality. Jackass: The Movie (2002)

The Jackass ensemble got back together in 2002 to film what they thought would be the final episode in the Jackass franchise, a feature-length film adaptation of the show that they branded Jackass: The Movie. This came after the show had been taken off the air. The cast made it abundantly clear that the movie would serve as their "farewell" to the viewers of the show, and as a result of the franchise moving to the movie format, the cast and crew were now able to avoid the censors and display more obscene stunts than those that were shown on the television show. MTV Films did help with the release of the picture, despite the fact that they had disputes earlier.

The movie, which had a production budget of only $5 million, earned more than $60 million in the United States alone, and it finished in the number one slot at the box office during its first weekend of release.

Jackass Number Two (2006)

After the release of Jackass: The Movie, director Tremaine and the rest of the actors of Jackass were under the impression that the Jackass franchise had reached its conclusion and that there would be no other films in the series. Nevertheless, during the final season of Wildboyz, Knoxville reunited with his former co-stars Pontius and Steve-O and travelled the world with them on several other adventures. Knoxville was claimed to have gone so far out during the show's filming that Tremaine grabbed him aside and said, "If you're prepared to go this far out, why don't you get all the guys together and make another movie?" Knoxville agreed. After completing both Viva La Bam and Wildboyz, the whole ensemble was available to reunite and film the sequel.

The second instalment of the Jackass franchise, titled Jackass Number Two, was made available to the public on September 22, 2006, and was distributed by Paramount Pictures. Jackass Number Two took the top spot at the box office in its first weekend of release, earning a total of $29.01 million. This was the same result as was achieved by the film's predecessor. Because Bam Margera's uncle Vincent "Don Vito" Margera was arrested and convicted of two counts of sexual assault on a juvenile, the footage of him performing many stunts included in the film was cut from the theatrical and DVD releases.

Jackass: Number Two was the subject of a half-hour documentary that premiered on MTV on September 7, 2006. When asked if the film represented the end of the Jackass franchise, one of the cast members, Steve-O, joked that the people who gained money from the franchise still wanted money, giving the idea that the actors would continue the franchise in some form or another. At the documentary's end, Johnny Knoxville reveals that he "had a hard time letting go" because he is "so hooked on doing stunts." The videographer, Dimitry Elyashkevich, adds that Knoxville was so frantic to shoot that he would film himself running into street signs just for extra footage. Jackass 2.5 (2007)

On the Howard Stern Show on September 5, 2007, Bam Margera announced the release of Jackass 2.5, a compilation DVD featuring stunts that were not included in Jackass Number Two. Jackass 2.5 is a collection of stunts that did not cut Jackass Number Two. On December 26, 2007, the DVD was made available to the public. A photo gallery and the production of Jackass 2.5 and Jackass: The Game is  special features on the DVD. Other extras include moments that were cut from the film.

Jackass Presents (2008)

Dickhouse Productions produced a film titled Jackass that was released directly to DVD on May 27, 2008. The film is meant to be a homage to the late stuntman Evel Knievel, who passed away on November 30, 2007, exactly one year before the film was made available to the public.
