Coach Gregg Popovich is never afraid to touch on hot-button issues and give his take on the state of the nation. Jay-Z's social justice summit was held in New York City on Saturday. Popovich spoke at the event. Attorney Barry Scheck was honored for his work on the Innocence Project at the event.

In his speech, Popovich said he did not know there were racists in the United States on such a high level."The country we live in pisses me off, hurts me, confounds me, and I wonder where the hell I'll live? I lived in a country I didn't know existed.

I knew there were racists, I understood that but I didn't realize that the injustice and seeking of power were to such an extent that we're in this position now," he said. During the last five years, Popovich has been clear about his political stances.

As a political critic, he routinely attacks Republican politicians such as former President Donald Trump. Trump was called "obviously racist" and "just ignorant" by him in 2020 after he supported a vote in Austin that reduced the police budget.

He also called those who failed to understand Black Lives Matter "just ignorant."As a result of the Capitol riots in February 2021, he deemed a second Trump impeachment as a 'good move'. In March 2021, he compared Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to Adolph Hitler for lifting mask mandates.
