My Name is Pauli Murray

IMDb rating – 6.3/10

This documentary film was created by the same team that brought us the Oscar-nominated film RBG. It sheds light on the importance of having access to the history of genders and races. I am sure most people learned about civil and women's rights activist Pauli Murray only after this movie. It is a tribute to her life that was filled with struggles being a non-binary African American. This exceptional movie successfully brings to light the influence and contributions of the unsung hero, Pauli Murray.

The Mad Women’s Ball

IMDb rating – 6.6/10

This psychological thriller drama is as beautiful as disturbing it is, which is a rare combination. It highlights the ill-treatment of mentally unwell women in the 1800s. The barbaric treatment will almost make you shiver. The acting, cinematography, sets, music – everything makes the extremely engaging storyline shine even brighter. It will give you an insight on how mentally ill women were perceived during those times.

The Lighthouse

IMDb rating – 7.5/10

This movie is entirely shot in black and white and will give an experience like no other. There are just two main characters who try to keep their sanity intact on a remote lighthouse island. The movie is multi-layered and demands your full attention to grasp every little hint of detail to experience this unique film completely. It grows uncomfortable as it progresses towards its ending that's left open for interpretation. Also, I bet every time you watch this brilliant film; you will find new interpretations.

Midsommar

IMDb rating – 7.1/10

This movie is not alien to any of us. It became popular for its unusual plot and story. Those who haven't watched this gem should add it to their watch list. I won't give out spoilers here, but this movie is exactly the kind of movie that will give you nightmares for at least a week. It is one-of-a-kind because most psychological thrillers or horror thrillers do not have a flowery, bright daylight set. At the onset, this looks like a positive and happy film that explores relationship issues but soon grows extremely dark and becomes something else that I bet you definitely won't be expecting at all.

Knives Out

MDb rating – 7.9/10

This movie is a perfect rollercoaster of fun and mystery. Also, you have Daniel Craig as the lead, so it already sounds like a great film, right? This whodunit movie is a delight to watch. Featuring a dysfunctional family and a suave detective, it will keep you guessing the real culprit. It has also got nominated for Academy Award for Writing. Watch this if you love a good entertaining murder mystery!
