Veteran Actress Pat Carroll Dies At 95

Pat Carroll, a veteran actress for her voice as Ursula in Disney's "The Little Mermaid" and whose career as an entertainer ned seven decades, died Saturday in Cape Cod, recovering from pneumonia.

Carroll's death was declared by her representative, Derek Maki. Maki stated that Carroll died with her friend by her side.

Born in Louisiana in 1927, Carroll's family moved to Los Angeles when she was five, and she began acting soon afterward. Her big screen debut arrived in 1947 in the film Hometown Girl, but her presence on variety shows she made her name over the next three decades.

She won an Emmy for her work on Caesar's Hour in 1957 and performed comedy roles alongside Jimmy Durante, Mickey Rooney, Steve Allen, and Charley Weaver on their variety shows.

She got her first voiceover work in 1966 for the animated television series The Super 6. By the 1980s, she was ever-present in cartoons, voicing roles in shows including Yogi's Treasure Hunt, Scooby-Doo, Garfield, and Superman, as well as the English dub of the 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro. But it was her lifelong dream to work in a Disney film, and the opportunity came in 1989 with The Little Mermaid.

She later described the character of Ursula as one of her favorites and reprised the role in several "Little Mermaid" sequels, spinoffs, videogames, and even theme park rides.

Pat Carroll loved the role and reprised it in several other works, including the spinoff TV shows, the Kingdom Hearts games, and rides and attractions at Disney theme parks.

Other significant appearances came on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Laverne & Shirley," "The Love Boat," "Designing Women," and "ER." Carroll conjointly ran the gauntlet of game shows in 20th-century television, with bows on "To Tell the Truth," "The Match Game," "I have Got a Secret," "Password All-Stars," "You Don't Say," and "The $10,000 Pyramid."

Her successful one-woman show Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein won several awards in the late 1970s; the recorded version netted her a Grammy in 1980.

In 1989, Carroll lent her talents to the voice best performance of Ursula in Disney's "The Little Mermaid," singing the movie showstopper number "Poor Unfortunate Souls." Carroll deemed Ursula a career-best role, reprising the character across various forms of media.

Carroll is survived by her girl, Kerry Karsian and Tara Karsian, and her granddaughter, Evan Karsian-McCormick.
