Parenting

Parenting is one job that is quite fun to do but on the other hand, is also very tricky. But as long as the kids are the main focus of the parents, and their well-being is the focus of the center, the tricky part can be navigated.

This is how the star Kevin Bacon sees parenting and this is how he approaches parenting with his partner and fellow actor Kyra Sedgwick. The couple’s kids have turned adults now, but Kevin Bacon recently shared his philosophy about “forcing” kids into boxes, and it’s an important message.

Open chat

Kevin Bacon who is a famous actor recently spoke to a news source as he was there promoting his upcoming movie They/Them. The movie, which is a horror-thriller film, is centered around a conversion therapy camp setting and the theme of accepting our kids for who they are, claimed the news source.

In the chat with the publication, Kevin Bacon admitted that he “struggles” with that subject because he can’t understand “the idea of other parents rejecting their children” who may disclose and identify within the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Full freedom

He also spoke about how he and his wife Kyra Sedgwick approached the conversations about sexuality and gender, with his kids, Travis who is 33 years old,and Sosie who is 30 years old currently when they were younger. He revealed that with their kids the couple tried their best and also mentioned that the couple gave their kids full freedom to do their own things and figure their life out and who they are. He also said that this open process has worked out for his kids but it was quite tough to practice.

Adding he also said, there has been a long history of forcing children into boxes, whether it’s based on something cultural or religious. I think that what you have to hope for is that, as a society, we grow and learn from that.”

Science and Statistics

Science supports Kevin Bacon’s claims. The importance of parental support for children has been underlined by The Trevor Project’s 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Adolescents Mental Health, which was based on responses about wellbeing and mental health from 33,993 LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 across the United States

The survey's key findings revealed that a 40 percent reduction in the number of suicide attempts in the previous year was associated with parents respectfully discussing their children's identities with them. Two out of every five LGBTQ teenagers reported living in a place that was "extremely unaccepting of LGBTQ individuals," according to the poll.

Importance of family support

But we’ve known for a long time just how important family support is for the health and safety of LGBTQ youth. A 2016 study found that “family support and acceptance is associated with greater self-esteem, social support, general health status, less depression, less substance abuse, and less suicidal ideation and behaviors among LGBT youth.”

Kevin’s approach to parenting supports the expert advice that the best thing parents can do for their kids, particularly their LGBTQ+-identifying kids, is to support them and love them unconditionally. Also, as Kevin says, it’s not asking a lot.
