Adam Sandler’s charms and acting skills have gotten him to where he is today in the industry of Hollywood. Some of his characters, like Happy Gilmore and hopeless romantic Robbie Hart from The Wedding Singer, are likelier than others. So here is a list of 10 of his iconic characters. 

Adam Sandler’s best iconic characters 

Adam Sandler’s everyman charms have made him one of Hollywood's most beloved movie stars. But he doesn’t always play a goofball that the audience can root for; rather, he also plays characters with serious anger issues, who constantly lie to people or immature characters stuck in a state of arrested development.

Some of his characters, like hopeless romantic Robbie Hart and unwavering Longfellow Deed, are likelier than others, like serial manipulators Dr. Danny Mccabee and Paul “Wrecking” Crewe.

Dr. Danny Maccabee

In the romantic comedy Go with It, plastic surgeon Dr. Danny Maccabee lies to women so they can have sex without making any commitments. He wears a wedding ring and makes up sob stories about being in a terrible marriage so women will feel sorry for him and sleep with him. Danny keeps the lie going when a woman he likes finds his fake ring. He recruits his assistant and her kids to pretend to be his family. The lengths he’ll go to deceive women are astounding.

Paul Wrecking Crewe 

Adam Sandler took on Burt Reynolds's role in the remake of The Longest Yard. The character he plays is a disgraced former NFL star who thinks the world revolves around him. At the movie's beginning, after being politely asked to engage in a party, Paul steals his girlfriend’s car, smashes it up, and takes the police on a wild goose chase.

The character becomes slightly likable behind bars as he assembles a football team of his fellow inmates and starts acting selflessly for the team's good.

Billy Madison 

The title character named Billy Madison, is a spoilt rich kid. He’s the heir to a Fortune 500 corporation that enjoys a life of ludicrous luxury, and yet he has never worked a day in his life. Billy didn’t even finish his grade 1-12 education- the only work people are legally required to do – until he was forced back to school at age 27 to prove he was competent enough to run his father’s company.

Happy Gilmore 

Happy Gilmore’s main character is a total hothead. He makes snap decisions and uses force without thinking first. He punches the young child in the face because he thinks his caddy is stealing his clubs. 

Happy is still likable because of his affection for his grandmother. He is just playing in the golf tournament to prevent the foreclosure of his grandma's home. He is likable because of his altruism.

Barry Egan 

Paul Thomas Anderson gave Adam Sandler his first acclaimed dramatic role in Punch-Drunk Love. Barry Egan is a loner who longs for company and affection but doesn’t know how to get it. The character he plays is mentally unstable and owes to severe emotional issues, and his overbearing sisters mercilessly bully him. Barry is more tragic than likable, but he starts to stand up for himself after finally finding love with his sister’s co-worker Lena. 

Jill Edelstein 

In Jack and Jill, Adam Sandler portrayed both titular characters. Jill is Jack’s lonesome twin sister, and he works in advertising. Jill lacks pals and mainly receives Thanksgiving invitations from her brother. Due to her loud tongue, eccentric demeanor, and dramatic overreactions, she is viewed as unpleasant, yet she has good intentions.

In his debut romantic comedy, The Wedding Singer, the character of the titular wedding singer is portrayed with bittersweet irony. A hopeless romantic, Robbie Hart performs at the weddings of others but is unable to find love in his own life.

When he develops feelings for a kind-hearted waitress, played by Drew Barrymore, it appears that his prayers have been heard. She is engaged to a philandering jerk, which is the only issue.

Longfellow Deeds 

Mr.Deeds, a remake of Frank Capra’s 1936 classic Mr.Deed Goes to Town, which was based on Clarence Budington Kelland’s 1935 short story Opera Hat, starred Sandler as the titular character. 

Without a doubt, Sandler's most endearing character is Longfellow Deed. He is compelled to do good. He never considers himself; instead, he considers others. Deeds receives a large sum of money from a distant relative, but he cannot accept it. He gives his servants equal treatment and lets the homeless use his shower.
