Early life

Don Shelby was born on May 27, 1947, and his birthplace is Muncie, Indiana. In 1978, Shelby began working as a news reporter for WCCO-TV. After continuing to work as a reporter, he adopted anchor duties in a bigger capacity, eventually taking Dave Moore's spot as the main anchor.

Professional career

Shelby served as the primary designer of WCCO's "I-Team" feature, which used rigorous investigative journalism to highlight contemporary concerns on a local and global level. By the end of 2004, Shelby had recovered from a slight stroke and was back reading the news. After his final WCCO-TV newscast in 2010, Shelby left the television industry. The Late Show with David Letterman cut to the WCCO newsroom during a section on Minnesota.

During the station's 10:00 broadcast, Shelby started hosting a series of video essay pieces called "In The Know" in February 2006. These episodes occasionally covered political, religious, and other subjects while typically maintaining Shelby's sharp journalistic approach from her previous "I-Team" work.

Famous Shelby Knot

The Pratt necktie knot was developed by Jerry Pratt, an employee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and was taught to Shelby in 1986. Shelby popularised it during his time on television; it was referred to as the "Shelby Knot" or "Pratt-Shelby." The knot may have been in use for some time, but it was not documented until Don Shelby made it famous with the aid of Jerry Pratt and the Minneapolis clothier Kingsford Lavender. Kingsford Lavender is said to have invented the phrase "Shelby" knot.
