Donald Francis Draper, whose actual name is Richard "Dick" Whitman, was born in Bunbury, Illinois, in 1926 to Evangeline, a prostitute, and Archibald "Archie" Whitman, an abusive alcoholic farmer (Joseph Culp). Dick, at ten years old, saw his mother die while giving birth and his father stomped to death by a startled horse.

From a salesman to a creative director

Whitman never completed high school, and, in his early 20s, he joined the American Army in 1950 to fight in the Korean War. After the war, he took up the job of a used-car salesman. Later he moved to New York City, where he was a fur merchant and night student at City College. With his boss's aid, he developed concept commercials and advertising content for the fur firm, which helped him develop his portfolio. At this work in 1953, Draper got to know Elizabeth "Betty" Hofstadt (January Jones), a model who had appeared in one of his advertisements and would later become his wife. After randomly running into Roger Sterling (John Slattery) at the shop, he conned him into giving him a job at Sterling Cooper, where he eventually rose to the position of Creative Director. After his company merged with the rival agency, he was forced to take leave, and he started freelancer for a year while still technically on SC&P's payroll.

The finale

Don resigns from his career and observes a therapy session at the retreat in the penultimate scene of the Mad Men season finale. Leonard, one of the group members, claims that he feels like a forgotten piece of food in the fridge. As Don hears this, a realization dawns on him. He sobs and clutches Leonard as he breaks down. Don doesn't seem to be a broken guy in the episode's last scene. His attitude has altered. He is seated in the lotus pose, with the serene California beach serving as his lovely backdrop. He practices meditation with the other retreatants before grinning subtly.
