Thomas was born to a teenage mother who was a single parent. After dropping out of high school, he spent two years homeless on the streets of Detroit. He met a preacher while he was homeless, encouraging him to return to high school and ultimately alter his life.

Thomas earned his undergraduate degree from Oakwood in 2001 after 12 years of study. Later, he preached and established a program to assist youth.

Career

In 2003, Eric Thomas joined Michigan State University (MSU). Thomas accepted the position and a fellowship to attend Michigan State University to earn a master's degree in K-12 administration with an emphasis on educational leadership.

Thomas began working on an undergraduate retention program for minority students at high risk. He wanted to share his knowledge with others who were going through difficult times, just like he had when he was a homeless teenager living on the streets of Detroit.
