James Gunn discusses why Thor: Love and Thunder had no influence on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At the start of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, 4 years after the end of 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Star-Lord and company apprehended an Asgardian distress call and saved the God of Thunder.

About James
James Gunn grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Leota and James Francis Gunn. He comes from a large Catholic family, and his ancestors are Irish and Czech. His father and uncles were all attorneys.
He's been trying to write and going to perform since he was a child. He began making 8mm films when he was twelve years old.
Gunn said
Gunn and his brothers all did graduate from Jesuit St. Louis University High School in 1984. [4][5] He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Louis University.

After they became the comedic hit
After becoming the humourous hit of Infinity War, Chris Hemsworth's Thor boarded the Benatar with Chris Pratt's Peter Quill and the "Asgardians of the Galaxy" in the dying minutes of Endgame.
Love and Thunder
Taika Waititi's eagerly anticipated sequel to Thor: Ragnarok, Love, and Thunder, was released in theatres earlier this month, with Hemsworth reprising his role as the titular character in his fourth solo outing (per se).
Love and Thunder picked up where Endgame left off, with Thor, Star-Lord, Dave Bautista's Drax, Pom Klementieff's Mantis, Bradley Cooper's Rocket, and Karen Gillan's Nebula, and Vin Diesel's Groot. Gunn's ragtag group of oddballs, on the other hand, only appear for a few mins before Thor tries to learn of a distress signal and splits up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

GotG Vol. 3 was originally supposed to help
GotG Vol. 3 was intended to help kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sadly, the film was postponed for a number of reasons, not the least of which was Marvel/hasty Disney's dismissal of Gunn due to previous tweets. Not only has Gunn conceded to crying while writing a script for GotG Vol. 3 - which will be the series' final installment - but those who have read it have praised it.

Due to having authored it and started out working on DC's The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Love and Thunder (scripts he'd read and given feedback on), it's understandable Gunn doesn't need to (or should he have to) drastically change his work going to follow his relatively short firing.
Guardians' cameo in Thor
While some fans thought the Guardians' cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder was a wasted chance, it undoubtedly makes perfect sense in retrospect. Because Gunn's GotG Vol. 3 lacks a prominent role in that film, Gunn's GotG Vol. 3 can stay focused on saying farewell to beloved characters.
In 2023
However, their presence in Love and Thunder will not go unobserved, as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will reintroduce Thor 4's space goats. As of now, the Vacation Special will be released in December 2022, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023.
