Spoilers follow for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds through Season 2. Strange New Worlds Season 1 seems that there’s not enough of it. Strange New Worlds’ second year has already taken a big change in its format and character relationships. The new season also feels like it’s leaving so much plot-wise because it just can’t fit everything into 10 episodes.

Character Development and Focus

It’s great for the Dr. M’Benga or Ortegas or La'an Noonien-Singh fans because those players all get some great stuff in this second year. But it’s not such good news for the Captain Pike fans. In fact, Anson Mount’s character even has much of an arc this time around, beyond some noodling around his love life with Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano).

Character Development and Focus

In this new season, Mount still always carries what he’s given to do with his mix of charisma and wry attitude which are always fun to watch. The fourth episode of the season really focuses on Pike and brings a new spin to another mission where the captain and his team must compete without even remembering who they are, especially what they’re doing on that planet.

The story that was mentioned before is informed about the very first episode of Star Trek ever is just an added bonus. Almost all episodes of this season it’s rooted in a smart and intriguing concept. Some first episodes and the final episodes may be the weakest parts of the season.

In ‘The Broken Circle’ episode, shows Spock (Ethan Peck) and the crew defying orders and stealing the Enterprise for no good reason. But, as always the interaction among this group is fun and some emotional. In episode 2, the cliffhanger from the end of season 1, which shows Number One (Rebecca Romijn) arrested due to her secret, genetically modified and wrapped up, though at least the entire episode is devoted to that story. Meanwhile, the final episode, ‘Hegemony’, feels like a replay of last season’s tale of the crew fighting the vicious predator race named Gorn, only with a less dramatic story.

Blend of Old and New

The creative team’s show maintains the spirit of the original series while offering something fresh. The crossover episode with the animated Trek comedy Lower Decks, ‘Those Old Scientists’, balancing the craziness of bringing Lower Decks leads Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler (Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid) into live-action without breaking either show. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, is no doubt part of the episode’s success because it changed the episodic format to other modern serialized shows

Musical Episode and Emotional Depth

‘Those Old Scientists’ is started three shocking episodes that also contain a war episode that’s as dark as anything Deep Space Nine ever did and the musical episode ‘Subspace Rhapsody’. Star Trek is about 22 years late to start the musical episode party, but once Spock starts singing, there’s no turning back how the format allowed for deeper emotional exploration.

Fan Reception and Critical Acclaim

Of course, ultimately the reason that Strange New Worlds works so well and got positive reviews is because of the characters. Fans' reactions to Chapel and Spock’s evolving relationship who has been a major thread this season, while La’an and Kirk’s not-romance has also had plenty of ups and downs. Relation between M’Benga and Chapel’s during the Klingon War has also been highlighted. The best-cast Trek show's ability to capture the essence of ‘Star Trek’.
