Ben Waites has been getting a lot of attention since he appeared on 'America's Got Talent,' but he hasn't forgotten his roots.

Sunday morning, the Nashville native ministered and shared his gift of music with the congregation at Christian Challenge Worship Center in Pineville.

In the past, Ben has come to our church several times, said pastor Nathan Martin. Having him perform in the community is great, and he's great to be back.'

Waites told congregation members that he was thrilled and honored to be here with them. Despite feeling honored, he felt unworthy of the attention.

While preparing for his performance and ministry, he recalled his grandfather's Pine Ridge Quartet, with which he sang and traveled as a child.

As a Southern Gospel singer, Waites said, 'you'll hear a variety of styles, genres, noises, and who knows what else this morning.'.

'But I learned a long time ago that Southern Gospel is not confined to any pre-defined style genre. This is evident from the history of the Southern Gospel.'.

His mother Sonya Waites, and father Darrell McClees assisted him in delivering the message, as well as baptizing his longtime friend Jack Tumlinson.

Growing up with something like this, being born with it, it's the norm,' Waites said in an earlier Town Talk interview. It's a daily thing for me. I don't think about it too much. People typically have to ask about it.

Gail Wilking presented Waites with a proclamation declaring July 31 as 'Ben Waites Day' and a key to the city. A key to the City of Pineville was also presented to Waites by Dupree.
