Obama, president from 2009 to 2013, says that December 14, 2012, was the worst day of his presidency.
The '10-Year Remembrance' gala by Sandy Hook Promise marks the 10th anniversary of the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.
It is still remembered as one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Obama went to Newtown two days after the killings to meet with the victims' families and give a speech, which he said was just as hard.
'I think that December 14, 2012, was the darkest day of my presidency,' Obama said at the '10-Year Remembrance' gala for Sandy Hook Promise on Tuesday night in New York City.
'It's the only time I've ever seen Secret Service cry,' he said shortly before he left office in 2017.
Obama said that what happened next was 'possibly the worst disappointment' of his time in office.
'The only time I was close to being cynical was when Congress did nothing right after the Sandy Hook shootings,' he said on Tuesday.
Even though the event was supposed to be a celebration, Obama said that the work to stop gun violence is not over.
