In this video, Takei discusses his close relationship with his late Star Trek co-star, Nichelle Nichols. Takei shared a heartfelt tribute to Nichols on Facebook in honor of the actress, recalling how he and husband Brad Altman had asked Nichols to stand in their wedding in 2008.
'During my marriage to Brad, Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Chekov on the show, served as our best man,' he recalled. I was deeply moved by the tributes and messages honoring Nichelle Nichols, our very own... 'Nichelle was chosen as our matron of honor.'
He continued, 'Nichelle declared, 'I am not a matron! If Walter can be the best man, why can't I be the best lady?'' he said. Because Walter's title implied 'best woman,' she was determined that she would be called 'best lady' by the guests.
'Sure, you are. I am including a picture of Nichelle, with us, as 'best lady' on our happy day,' Takei added alongside photos of Nichols.
Taking also wrote that he was touched by the tributes and messages honoring Nichelle Nichols, his longtime friend, and Lieutenant on Star Trek, later becoming Commander Uhura.
She observed many Japanese Americans handing envelopes to a receptionist in the lobby when my father passed away,' Takei wrote. Her curious nature led her to ask, 'George, what are they bringing to the funeral?' I replied, 'Friends and relatives are contributing money to support the funeral.'
It was the first time Nicole had heard of the Japanese tradition known as koden,' he explained. Jason received an envelope from her containing a $500 check.
Furthermore, Takei noted that Nichols always 'donated her talent' during his fundraising dinners and political campaigns in the 1970s, noting that she made 'every event feel special and glamorous.'
In fact, Nichelle attended every important milestone in my life that she could, including the Broadway premiere of Allegiance and later the Los Angeles premiere,' he said. She knew how special these occasions were to us, as a trained stage actress.'
Taking it to the conclusion of his note, Takei said, 'While fans will miss and honor the famous actress who opened so many paths on the screen
I will also miss the dear friend who always let you know she was there to support you, love you, and experience this strange and wonderful life with you. Nichelle Nichols, you were one in a million in so many ways.'
