“When I was on the set of Yellowjackets in 2000, I was already hungry,” she recalled. During an interview this week, Melanie Lynskey opened up about her painful memories of being mocked for her body two decades ago.
The Hollywood Reporter published a profile of her and her fellow 'Yellowjackets' co-stars Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, and Tawny Cypress published Wednesday.
Lynskey spoke about body-shaming and weight pressure she experienced on the set of 2000's 'Coyote Ugly.'
There was a regimen that all the girls had to follow. 'That was ridiculous,' Lynskey said. The only way I could fit into this body was to starve myself and be as thin as possible.
In wardrobe fittings and on set, she described being criticized about her body by costume designers and makeup artists.
It was always like, 'You're not beautiful.' 'You aren't beautiful,' she said. In your early 20s, so much of it is about beauty and how people respond to you, as well as “do people want to fuck you? ”
Women's bodies weren't treated well in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Jessica Simpson created a media frenzy in 2009 when she showed up to an event wearing a pair of size-four jeans - and was ruthlessly made fun of for her size.
Kate Winslet recalled on the 'WTF with Marc Maron' podcast last year that she was subjected to a lot of 'personal physical scrutiny' for not being rail-thin for the 1997 movie 'Titanic.'
In May, Lynskey told Vulture that she faced this type of pressure following her breakout role in 1994's 'Heavenly Creatures.'It was constantly brought to her attention that she was not thin, confident, or pretty at the time.
“Mostly thin,” she explained. “There was certain pleasant energy they wanted people to have. Unchallenging. And I wasn’t successful doing that.”Since the age of 12, she has struggled with disordered eating.
'I had been on this diet for a very long time that was 800 calories a day, and anything over 800 made me throw up,' she told Vulture. There was never a binge in my life. Then I'd be like, 'Oh, well, now I have to throw it up.'' When I was starving, I'd have another teacup of Special K.
Her wake-up call came in the form of intervention when she started dating actor Andrew Howard, whom she met on the set of the 1999 film 'The Cherry Orchard.'Although Lynskey has been through a lot, she still suffers from body shame.
In January, she hit back at 'Yellowjackets' fans who accused her of being overweight. She tweeted during the premiere of Yellowjackets, 'This is my life since Yellowjackets.'
“Most egregious are the ‘I care about her health!! Bitch, you don't see me riding my Peleton! In the park, you won't see me running with my child. A thin body doesn't always equate to a healthy one.'
