On Little People, Big World (LPBW), Tori and Zach Roloff's son Jackson Roloff underwent leg surgery, and TLC fans want to know what the procedure entailed.
Jackson Roloff, 5, was born with a type of dwarfism called achondroplasia, which causes little people to have bowed legs due to their shorter stature.
Last November, the LPBW duo opted for his son to have a less invasive surgery to treat the bowing on his legs. This procedure is called guided plate growth surgery or hemiepiphysiodesis. A source says that there is no prevention or cure for the condition.
With hemiepiphysiodesis, the surgeon cuts a small incision into the growth plate, attaching a titanium plate on one side of the bone. As a result, the longer portion of the leg will temporarily stop growing, giving the shorter side time to catch up.
The LPBW offspring was given a walker from the hospital to help him recover and get on his feet again. It typically takes weeks for the bones to heal, so Jackson must practice walking so his legs become stronger over time.
When Jackson returned home from his surgery, he felt uncomfortable and had trouble adjusting. He wasn't his usual, happy-go-lucky self.
Tori shared a post on Instagram to update her followers about how Jackson is doing. The photo she used showed Jackson laying in bed with his 'pal bunny' stuffed animal. 'This kid time and time again blows us away,' she wrote. 'He was so brave and confident. He made @zroloff07 and I am so proud.'
LPBW saw a small amount of progress on the show when Jackson made baby steps with his walker when Amy Roloff came to visit. However, time will tell to see if the surgery completely fixed the bowing on his legs.
