John de Lancie, widely known as the omnipotent Q first presented in the Star Trek premiere episode
The Next Generation recently took on the part again for Star Trek: Picard's second season.
However, it seems that despite how much De Lancie enjoys portraying the cunning Q, there was one thing he wanted to make sure would be different this time. He wanted confirmation that the wardrobe issue would be different, to put it simply.
'You're not putting me in tights, I hope,' was my initial thought. No, he'll be just like you are right now, he said. I said, ‘OK. Well, then, that makes a lot of sense.'”
Fans would likely recall that De Lancie frequently wears a Starfleet uniform in his appearances throughout the Trek franchise.
We soon discover that there's more to John de Lancie's conduct than what first appears to be the villain of Star Trek: Picard's second season.
Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his companions were compelled to go across time, and this was actually Q's last-ditch effort to aid the former Enterprise commander.
For what it's worth, we don't genuinely think Q is gone, and Jonathan Frakes is to blame for that. We wrote on Picard's noticeable absence in season 2 shortly after the season 2 finale.
No such sequence appeared in Picard's second season, despite Frakes having suggested it in an interview along with De Lancie and Brent Spiner.
In reality, season 2 of Frakes features virtually no screen time. We hypothesised that Frakes got his wires crossed and was actually talking about a scene from season 3 because seasons 2 and 3 of Picard were filmed back-to-back.
The following year should reveal if we are correct and will see John de Lancie in Star Trek once more. The third and final season of Picard, which has no set air date as of yet, is anticipated to broadcast in 2023.
