Barbie Movie Is Banned From Showing In Vietnam Because It Is 'Offensive' To The World Map

By FactsWow Team

Banning reason

On Monday, the state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper reported that the country's film bureau had banned the film because the marked map waters claimed by Vietnam as Chinese territory, calling it 'insulting.'

The illustration by the line

China uses the nine-dash line to illustrate its claim to large areas in the South China Sea. According to Reuters, this includes areas Vietnam claims over its continental shelf.

The film set to premiere

According to Tuoi Tre, the largely- anticipated movie starring Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, and Ryan Gosling was first listed to open in Vietnam on July 21, the same day it hits theaters in the US.

Statement by the director

'We do not license the release of the American film 'Barbie' in Vietnam because it contains objectionable images of the nine-dash line,' Vi Kien Thanh, director of the Vietnam Cinema Department, said in a press release.

The film was banned

This is just the latest instance where Vietnam has banned a film depicting the South China Sea.

China’s refusal

China's nine-dash line was overruled by an international arbitration award issued by a Dutch court in 2016, but China refused to accept the court's ruling, Reuters reported.

Similar reasons

Vietnamese officials withdrew DreamWorks' animated film 'Abominable' in 2019 and banned the screening of Sony's action film 'Unchartered' last year for the same reason.

Mistake with the map

The U-formed line, first visible on a map in 1947, covers components of what Vietnam considers its continental shelf, wherein it has made concessions to take advantage of oil.

The letdown by the film

The line is controversial because many of China's neighbors - including Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam - have overlapped, and competing territorial claims and Chinese territory are disputed.

This is one of many

'Barbie' is not the first film to encounter obstacles when released in Vietnam due to the dispute over the 'nine-dash line.'
