The People's Choice Awards on Tuesday saw Lizzo accept the People's Champion award on behalf of 17 activists.
In her acceptance speech, the About Damn Time singer explained her desire to use her platform to 'amplify marginalized voices.'
She replied, 'I was on the fence about accepting this award when I first heard about it. After all, when I champion people, I don't need a trophy.'
As a woman, I have used my platform to amplify marginalized voices ever since the beginning of my career. She said that being an icon isn't a matter of how long you've had a platform.
This is an honor I share with others, so let's make some noise for the people. These are all activists who deserve to be in the limelight.'
Lizzo introduced each activist, freedom fighter, and human rights advocate by name and outlined their achievements briefly.
In an emotional introduction to Maggie Mireles Thomas, whose teacher sister Eva died in the Uvalde school shooting earlier this year, she singled out gun violence as 'wretched and senseless.'
The singer concluded her speech by yelling, 'Power is always with the people. Thank you, People's Choice. Support them and follow them.'
The Song of 2022 award went to Lizzo's About Damn Time and the People's Champion Award.
