Padma Lakshmi, Salman Rushdie's ex-wife, sends her best wishes to the author, who is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a stabbing attack.
Salman Rushdie, who sustained severe injuries after a stabbing, has received Padma Lakshmi's well-wishes as he recovers.
Two days after the incident, the Top Chef host tweeted, 'Relieved @SalmanRushdie is recovering after Friday's nightmare. I was worried and wordless, and can finally exhale. Now hoping for swift healing.'
Salman's agent told another source the same day the Padma spoke out that the author has begun his 'road to recovery,' adding, “It will take a long time; the injuries are severe, but his condition is heading in the right direction.'
The family's eldest son, Zafar Rushdie, 42, also shared a statement about his dad on behalf of the family. According to him, his father is receiving extensive ongoing medical treatment in the hospital.
'It is a great relief for us that yesterday he was able to talk a few words after being taken off the ventilator. Although the severity of his injuries is severe, his feisty & defiant sense of humor remains intact.'
An attacker stabbed Salman 12 times about six inches from his chest, neck, abdomen, and face, according to another source. Salman was preparing to speak at the Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, NY, on Aug. 12.
Airlifting the author to a hospital resulted in attempted murder and assault charges being filed against the suspect.
He continued, 'We are so grateful to our audience members who bravely came to his aid and administered first aid, along with the police and doctors who attended to him, and for the support, we received from around the world. The family will continue to support him at his bedside and provide him with comfort during this difficult time.'
Salman married the Padma four times. Before his marriage to Zafar's mother, Clarissa Luard, Elizabeth West with whom he shares a 23-year-old son, Milan Rushdie, and Marianne Wiggins, he was married to three other women.
In addition to charges of attempted murder and assault in the second degree, Hadi Matar has pleaded not guilty to the charge of stabbing.
Nathaniel L. Barone II, Mr. Matar's attorney, said that in our country, everyone benefits from the presumption of innocence, fair trial, and due process. It will be a pleasure to aggressively exercise Mr. Matar's constitutional rights at the scheduled Preliminary Hearing on August 19, 2022.'
The motive for Salman's attack remains a mystery, as he lived in hiding for several years after Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's 'fatwa' condemned killing the author of his novel The Satanic Verses in 1989.
Another source report cited law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation as saying Matar appeared sympathetic to Shia extremism and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
