Sheree Gustin and Steve Burton, the star of the television show General Hospital, are divorcing

After splitting from Sheree Gustin and living apart for several months, Steve Burton is ready to move on. As per court documents obtained by E! News on July 12, the actor playing E.J. on General Hospital for 23 years has filed for divorce from his wife of 23 years.

Reason for separation

Burton cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the breakup in the filing submitted on July 8 to the Superior Court of California of Orange County, stating that the date of March 1, 2022, was designated for the date of separation.

A court document detailing Burton's petition for joint physical and legal custody of the family's youngest children has been filed. Among them are son Jack, 16, and daughter Brooklyn, 7.

The court is also being asked to end its ability to award spousal support to either him or Gustin, with whom he shares a daughter aged 18, Makena, which the couple had in 2011.

The filing of Burton's divorce comes one month after he publicly confirmed the split between him and Gustin and two months after Burton revealed that Gustin is pregnant with a baby he does not have any involvement in.

On May 4, he shared a note on his Instagram Story, stating that he had been separated from Sheree, 'So I had to clarify something.'

The actress has not publicly commented on the breakup but posted a reflection on her 'mistakes' on Instagram in January despite not publicly commenting.

In the context of what she wrote alongside a photo of herself looking out at the ocean, she wrote a caption along the lines of, 'If you could go back, what would you tell your younger self? I would have said: follow your passion,' she wrote.
