Robert Downey Jr. was born into an artistic family in 1965. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was a filmmaker and a drug addict; therefore, he also encouraged his son to fall into these habits. His mother, Elsie Downey, was also an alcohol addict. This later led to the divorce of his parents. At the age of six and after starring in his first ever movie, Pound Robert started smoking marijuana and drinking white wine. Since this was his way of spending time with his father, by the age of eight, he had become a complete drug addict.

Dropout of High School

Robert Downey Jr. got into a high school in California. However, he dropped out at the age of 16. The reason for dropping out was that he wanted to pursue acting full-time.

His Addiction Came in The Way of His Acting Career

While Robert Downey Jr. was making his way into acting, he was dating Sarah Jessica Parker. After he added more drugs, including cocaine and heroin, their relationship also ended. In 1996, he was arrested while driving. He was arrested for carrying an unloaded .357 Magnum Pistol, cocaine, and heroin. He did not sober up even after he came back. He was once found sleeping in a neighbor’s house after trespassing while he was on drugs.

Due to his continuous addictions, in 1999, he was sentenced to three years in prison. His sentence to prison was a shock for everyone. Imagine an Oscar nominee standing before the judge and pleading to be sent to rehab! However, he was released early and allowed to go to rehab.

2003 – 2005: Lucky Years

In 2003, Robert Downey Jr. met Susan Levin, the producer on the sets of Gothika. Both of them fell in love with each other. He committed to sober up and get back to his acting career. He focused on therapy, meditation, and yoga and became drug-free. Susan Levin and Robert Downey Jr. eventually got married in 2005. As of now, they have two beautiful children.

Reentering Hollywood

Everybody hesitated in believing that he was now drug-free. He starred in a movie in 2003 after Mel Gibson paid liability insurance.
