Aya Zeabi

A teenager and her family in Massachusetts are battling for the daughter's right to maintain her religious identity after the student's school claimed that her hijab violated the school uniform policy. According to Aya Zeabi, her younger sister went to Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden for her first day of school last week and had officially taken "a significant step" to wear a hijab, which is a customary Muslim head covering for women. A hijab is a headscarf that is worn by Muslim women. Zeabi remarked that one does not simply don a headscarf for fun. "It takes a lot of introspection and confidence to determine that you're ready for it, and it takes much more to practise wearing it everyday out in public, especially during such unfavourable times," the author writes. "It's important to remember that you're not alone in this."

Racist and discriminatory measures

"Any sort of head covering, including hats, bandanas, and nets are not allowed," it says in the parent handbook for the 2022-2023 school year at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School. "Any kind of head covering" includes "any kind of head covering." In addition, the policy that states the institution "will provide reasonable accommodations for students who have honestly held religious views or documented medical health conditions" may be found on at least two pages of the student handbook. According to Zeabi, her younger sister "came home crying because of the racist and discriminatory measures taken at her own school." According to Zeabi, who went to Mystic Valley High School as well, this is not the first time the school has had a problem with students wearing the hijab. Dalia, her older sister, had dealt with the same problem ten years before.

"She remained in in-school detention until we brought a signed letter from our masjid's imam saying that the hijab was a religious covering and a major part of Islam and not something she did for fashion or fun," Zeabi said. "The letter stated that the hijab was a religious covering and a major part of Islam and that it was not something she did for fashion or fun." Alexander Dan, the Director and Superintendent of the school, released the following statement to news media: "Mystic Valley Regional Charter School wishes to express its remorse at how the recent incident of one of our Muslim students who wanted to display her faith by wearing the hijab was mishandled. It is our existing policy to allow students to express their deeply held beliefs by dressing in a manner that is consistent with their religious affiliation, he explained.

We would like to reiterate that the respected member of staff who was in charge of supervising the process should not be held responsible for what has occurred; however, we are aware that our handling of the situation may have come across as insensitive, and we look forward to using this moment as a learning opportunity to improve our policies and procedures. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement in which it claimed, "As of today, August 20, the family has authorised us to let you know that the immediate problem is under control because the student is wearing her hijab in school." According to the further statement, "We will continue to examine what transpired, assess the procedures of the school, and explore applicable state and federal legislation."
