Pop artist Ariana and the Rose

Pop artist Ariana and the Rose wants fans of her new album Lonely Hearts Club to "dance, sweat, and weep it out."

Ariana and the Rose are prepared to make the transition from independent act to big fame.

Singer’s first album

On Friday, the Brooklyn-based pop singer launched her first album Lonely Hearts Club, an amazing dance album with catchy choruses and empowering lyrics that would make her foremothers (such as Madonna, Robyn, and Kylie Minogue) proud.

Ariana DiLorenzo

Media spoke with the celebrity (real name: Ariana DiLorenzo) about her path as an independent musician, predicting the dance-pop renaissance, and discovering viral success on TikTok prior to the release of her album.

Composing during the pandemic

I composed the entire piece during the pandemic. I was alone in my apartment with nothing to do, and I was writing as a coping technique and a way to unwind at the end of the day. Those songs were eventually what comprised the record.

So I composed the entire piece on the piano. I believe the first concept I got was the chorus of "Lonely Hearts Club" — that was the first thing I wrote — and the second song we composed was "Every Body."

I knew from the beginning that I wanted it to be slightly more danceable and to have a house influence. I wanted to explore all the various meanings of dance music on this album; some of the tracks are also pure pop.

Drake's new album and Beyoncé's "Break My Soul"

Currently, a major dance revival is occurring. Both Drake's new album and Beyoncé's "Break My Soul" are heavily influenced by dance music. Was it a deliberate choice to create a dance record while confined during a lockdown?

Song released by Beyoncé

100 percent. Throughout history, when times are tough, house music has experienced a revival. I was not surprised when Beyoncé released that song. I responded, "Of course!" Obviously, as an independent artists, we had to begin a few years ago in order to get everything moving.

But seeing it trickle in has been a really good confirmation that "Okay, I trusted my instincts when making the album." I desired to create something for when the world became accessible.

Thank God we're at a place where we can dance, sweat, and cry together. But we were all inside. I felt like everyone was ready to go out, so I wanted to create appropriate music.

Madonna fan

I'm a major Madonna fan. I am a big Goldfrapp fan. Robyn is the sun, moon, and stars for me. I adore female dance music producers like Kylie Minogue. And I believe our perspective on dance pop has shifted, especially given our current nostalgic phase.

You look back on Britney and people are like, "Wait a minute, this music is fantastic"; Blackout was an incredible album.

Long ago "pop" music was like a swear word

Long ago, everyone considered "pop" music as if it were a swear word. This was a significant factor when I initially began making music as a child. However, I've always admired pop artists who created danceable music with substance.

Not because they were on a dance floor does not imply they lacked content; this is something I always return to and attempt to include in my own music.

New York City bar

The initial clubs I visited were gay clubs. The first thing I ever did was wrap myself in glitter and dance at a New York City bar while underage to Madonna and the finest of the best. I fell in love with music as an experience, not just something you listen to on headphones. I believe that pop music truly embodies this principle.

Rihanna and Gaga

When you look at Rihanna and Gaga, they gave you the world: They gave you a pop song, and they gave you a look. I adore theatre, and I believe that pop music at its finest is a grand theatre that invites people inside.

People just want to feel like they're a part of something, and I believe that pop music helps them feel like they're a part of something.
