When Venus Williams and fellow tennis player Jamie Murray were asked a shady question about their siblings during a press conference this weekend, they did not mince words. At Wimbledon this year, the two athletes competed in the mixed doubles competition. One reporter asked Venus and Jamie whether they hoped to beat her sister Serena Williams and his brother Andy Murray in the tennis tournament after they won their first-round match against Michael Venus and Alicja Rosolska. The reporter asked, "Are you in it to win it, or are you in it to get past the third round where Serena and Andy lost?" He was referring to how Serena and Andy had lost in had respectively been defeated in earlier rounds of Wimbledon's singles competition.
As Venus, 42, looked at Jamie, 36, apparently confused, she wondered, "What kind of a question is that?" She responded sarcastically to the reporter, "We're just taking a stroll.". "Come on!" she exclaimed. Although Venus dismissed his words, the reporter wasn't done yet. "Are you interested in the experience or will you go all out?" he asked. Venus clapped back. "Are you going to write an excellent article or just a half-decent one?" she asked. There was an outpouring of support for Venus' response on Twitter, with people praising her words as "a brilliant response." Unfortunately, Venus and Jamie weren't able to progress much further. After a marathon third-set tiebreaker, the duo failed to defeat Alicia Barnett and Jonny O'Mara in the following round.
Venus had not played for over 10 months before this tournament. Last week, her activewear brand EleVen posted "The queen is BACK," which announced her return to London. "@venuswilliams returns to the historic grass courts of @wimbledon where she holds five singles titles, six doubles titles, and may we add a mixed doubles title to that list?" Harmony Tan of France, 24, defeated Serena Williams in the first round of the Wimbledon singles tournament, which was her first singles match in over a year. The 40-year-old Serena Williams described her return to the courts as an "insane and intense" following her return on Instagram. She captioned her photo with the caption, "Not the result I expected, but goodness me I enjoyed that." Hopefully, you did as well. Onward and upward.
