Today's Hoda Kotb absence explained: Family health concern

Hoda Kotb’s absence in March 1 Today Episode | On Wednesday, colleagues revealed that Hoda Kotb had taken a break from the Today show to focus on her family's health. In addition to co-anchoring Today with Savannah Guthrie and hosting the fourth hour of the NBC daytime show alongside Jenna Bush Hager, the Emmy-winning journalist has been absent from live shows since February 17. On February 20, Hoda and Jenna aired a pre-tape of Today with Hoda and Jenna in which she appeared. Until Wednesday, viewers weren't told what her leave meant, with Guthrie and co-host Craig Melvin simply saying she was "out." Sheinelle Jones and Craig Melvin have been filling in for Guthrie. On Tuesday morning, Guthrie suffered a Coronavirus infection and had to step away from taping. As Melvin and Jones anchored Wednesday's show, he provided more context regarding Kotb and Guthrie's situation at 7:30 a.m.

Concern about Savannah's health

It was mentioned that Savannah and Hoda were both absent. Savannah returned home after undergoing a positive COVID test yesterday. We wish Savannah a speedy recovery. Also, Hoda is doing well, as we have been informed. We want to inform you that she is fine. We have been concerned about Hoda's health issues, so we look forward to seeing her and Savannah back on the desk soon. Al Roker, the Today weatherman, stated, "We love you both."

Kotb's encouragement

While absent from social media, Kotb shares inspiring and encouraging posts. On Monday, her message read, "Choose hope." On Sunday, she wrote, "Sometimes miracles occur when good people do kind things." Kotb's post on February 24 read, "Here's to strong women. Let us know them, become them, raise them," adding, "I see you as a strong woman." As well there was another post in the past week that focused on how "dark clouds" move on, while another pointedly showed a child figure hearing, "One day you will realize how brave you were."

Love from the fans

The show on Tuesday morning showed Guthrie leaving in real time. In other news, we had an interesting morning," Jones said halfway through the show. We love Savannah, and we wish her a speedy recovery," Jones said after Savannah left early. She had been feeling ill, so she took a COVID test. A life-threatening health crisis had kept Roker from Today, but he returned in January. Outside the studio, dozens of fans held signs saying "Welcome Back" to the beloved Today personality. Roker confessed to missing his second family and was overjoyed to be back in pants. My family is you, and I miss you so much," he said. "It's great to be back." The excitement in his voice was infectious. He said, "I am so grateful to see you and the crew. It's all adrenaline for me right now.
