Smokey Robinson was born on Feb 19, 1940, as William Smokey Robinson in Detroit, Michigan. Smokey was raised in a poor household. His nickname Smokey was given to him by his uncle Claude.

During High School started a group named Five Chimes. Smokey was passionate about music as a child. He listened to the various amazing artists on the radio. His doo-wop group was later named the Matadors.

The Matadors went on numerous tours and changed their name to Miracles. In 1957 Smokey connected with songwriter Berry Gordy and the first single, "Got a job/of Miracles", was released. Robinson was learning electrical engineering in college.

Gordy formed Tamla Records, which was later renamed Motown Records. After the record deal with the company Miracles released Shop Around in 1960. It sold a million copies.

They gave great hits together " "I Second That Emotion," "Baby Baby Don't Cry ``and others. Robinson was the principal songwriter, singer, and producer of the group named Smokey Robinson & the Miracles in 1965.

Robinson wrote many songs for artists associated with Motown Records. He produced tracks for the Temptations, the Marvelettes. In 1969 Smokey decided to retire. He wanted to spend time with his family.

The group released their new hit Tears of a Clown." Robinson decided to be with the group and then parted ways in 1972. He spends a year alone before starting his solo career.

Smokey released his solo Album Smokey in 1973. The music was amazing, but Robinson failed to make an impact, maybe because he was competing with great solo artists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

In 1975 Smokey Robinson made an impact as a solo artist. He released ``A Quiet Storm, an album with songs like Baby That's Backatcha" He was also the Vice President of Motown Records.

In 1979 he gave his single Cruising. It was in the top Ten on the Chart. In 1981 he released "Being With You" In 1987, he gained huge popularity with "One Heartbeat."

In 1988 Robinson stepped down as fey Vice President of Motown records. Post which he collaborated with various artists and singers.

Smokey Robinson was married to Claudette Rogers, a member of Miracles. The two were a parent to two adorable children. Robinson also has a child with another woman leading to his divorce from Claudette. They were divorced in 1986. Smokey married Frances Gladney in 2002.
