Kirk Edward Herbstreit was born in Centerville, Ohio, on August 19, 1969. In Kirk's senior year, he was voted the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year while playing quarterback for the football team at Centerville High School. Baseball and basketball were among Kirk's other sports. His father, Jim, served as an assistant coach at Ohio State.

From 1989 to 1993, he attended Ohio State University, where he played for the Buckeyes. He became a co-caption in 1992 and was elected as the team's MVP. At 28, he set a record for pass completions, later broken by Troy Smith in 2006. In 1993, he earned a Business Administration degree, and the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic is named in his honor. He supported various charity events like The Make-A-Wish Foundation Ultimate Sports Auction and the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer.

Career

In 1996 he joined ESPN, and since then, he has worked as an analyst and sideline reporter for ABC's Saturday college football primetime games, as well as the primary commentator on "College GameDay". He authored the "Inside The Game With Kirk Herbstreit" column for "The Sporting News," and he has often contributed to Columbus's 97.1 The Fan, an affiliate of ESPN Radio. Kirk has worked as a color analyst for "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts and participated on the "Who's Now" panel in 2007 with Michael Wilbon and Keyshawn Johnson.

On June 13, 1998, Kirk and Allison Butler got married. When Allison and Kirk first met, they were cheerleaders at Ohio State and married on June 13, 1998. They are proud parents of Zak (born in 2003), Chase (born in 2006), and Tye and Jake, who are identical twins, are the couple's four boys (born in 2000).

At Montgomery Bell Academy, Tye and Jake were football players who later joined the Clemson University team. Zac played at Montgomery Bell as well. He committed to Ohio State in late 2020. As a practicing Christian, Herbstreit often attends Bible studies.
