Johnny Mathis was born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935. He is the fourth child. He has seven other siblings. Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd are his parents.

His father used to work in vaudeville. He was encouraged and bought a piano for his son as he saw the talent. Johnny learnt music from his father. He learnt "My Blue Heaven."


He used to sing and dance at church functions as well.

At the age of 13, he began voice coaching with  Connie Cox. He learnt voice scales and voice exercises. Johnny learned two types of music, classical and operatic.

Mathis was an athlete in his school. He was also a bright academic student and wanted to be an English teacher or a Physical Education teacher.

Johnny's musical career grew when he was 19. Helen Noga spotted him while he was jamming. Noga was the owner of multiple nightclubs. She was also managing Mathis. He got a chance to work with amazing jazz artists of all time. They began booking various gigs. It led him to become popular, and he signed a deal with Columbia Records.

Mathis's first album was released in 1956. Later he released his first record album "Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song. It didn't grow so quickly, and he stayed at nightclubs. At The same time, his two popular albums were released, Wonderful! Wonderful!" and "It's Not for Me to Say."

In June 1957, He appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show. He also became popular. After that, he released Chances Are," the second single to gain notoriety. In 1957 Mathis released Wild is the Wind" in the same album.

The song was nominated for the Oscars. It was nominated under the Oscar category for Best Original Song. Mathis performed at the song awards in 1958.

His next album, "Johnny's Greatest Hits", spent 490 weeks on the Top Billboard 200 album charts. It was a huge record for the weeks it made it to the Billboard U.S. chart.
In 1958 Mathis made his second appearance in the movie A Certain Smile. The song was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song.

In 1958 Mathis left San Francisco with Nogas and shifted to Beverly Hills. Nogas lived with her family, and Mathis lived with him In a different apartment.
In 1959 Mathis appeared on ABC's "The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom.

Two of his biggest hits in 1962-1963 were “Gina" and "What Will Mary Say."

In 1964 Mathis and Noga parted ways. Mathis had founded Jon Mat Records by the time. Mathis continued to produce music while the Beatles were his competition and gained popularity. At the same time, he was still waiting to make it on the top list. By the late '70s, he saw a setback in his career. It began with Christmas's No. 1 single in the U.K., "When a Child is Born.

In 1978 he collaborated with Deniece Williams and produced Too Much, Too Little, Too Late. It reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. In 1957 it was his first single to be a hit. The duo then released various songs together. You're All I Need to Get By being one made it to number 47 on the Hot 100.

The duo grew successful, and Mathis produced various songs and the partnership with Dionne Warwick, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight and many more.

Mathis still performs live, but after 2000, he isn't going out on tours or performing ad concerts that much. He is one of the few artists who perform with his Orchestra.

Mathis has the longest tenure of any artist recording at the Columbia Label. He had five of his albums on the Billboard Charts. Mathis has released 200 singles, and 71 went globally.

In the "Tonight Show", the host Johnny Cartzon claimed Johnny Mathis is the best ballad singer in the world.

Mathis is a fan of sports. He is also an athlete. Mathis is so good that he could have made it to the Olympics. He is an amazing golfer. He has hosted several Johnny Mathis Golf Tournaments in the U.K. and the U.S.
In 1985 he hosted a golf tournament for a charity in Belfast.

He also enjoys cooking, and in 1982 he published a cookbook, "Cooking for You Alone."
