Early Life

Herb Alpert was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on March 31, 1935. His parents, Tillie and Louis Leib Alpert raised him in Boyle Heights on the Eastside of Los Angeles. His parents were Jewish and came to the United States from Ukraine and Romania. He was born into a family of musicians. Herb took trumpet lessons when he was eight years old and played at dances when he was a teenager. He went to Fairfax High School and graduated in 1952. After high school, he joined the Army. During his time in the Army, Herb played the trumpet at ceremonies and wanted to become an actor. When he left the Army, he went to USC and joined the USC Trojan Marching Band, a well-known marching band.

Music Career

He launched his music career when he signed on as a songwriter for Keen Records. Herb's professional music career started in 1957 when he started writing and recording songs. Together with a musician named Rob Weerts, he set up a makeshift recording studio in his garage and penned several songs that reached the top twenty. Over two years, Alpert had a hand in creating several Top 20 successes, including Sam Cooke'sCooke's " (What A) Wonderful World." Dot Records hired Herb in 1960 to record vocals under the alias Dore Alpert. The first recording by Carnival Records was "Tell It to the Birds."

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass is the band he founded that gained him the most notoriety. Hearing a brass band at a bullfight in Tijuana, Mexico, in the early 1960s inspired him to create his characteristic sound. Herb used two tape recorders to overdub his trumpet to get this distinctive sound. When Herb first recorded the Tijuana Brass, he played the trumpet over a slightly delayed track. He paid out of pocket for his debut record, "The Lonely Bull," which became a Top 10 smash in the fall of 1962. His first proper album, titled "The Lonely Bull," debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. Alpert recruited The Wrecking Crew, a collective of Los Angeles session musicians, to play on his future recordings. There was a growing demand for live performances by the Tijuana Brass by the end of 1964, so Alpert auditioned and hired a team of session men, including electric guitarist John Pisano, pianist Lou Pagani, drummer Nick Ceroli, bassist Pat Senatore, and trumpeter Tonni Kalash. Herb Alpert fronted the band on trumpet and sang lead. In 1965, the group's members released their first album, quickly rising to the ranks of the music industry's biggest earners.

The group's album "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" topped the Billboard charts for over three years after its initial release in 1965. Going Places was the title of the second album released that year. In 1966, the Tijuana brass sold more than 13 million recordings, surpassing even The Beatles'' total. That same year, Alpert achieved a feat that has never been duplicated: he simultaneously had five albums in the Top 20 of the Billboard Pop Album chart. The Guinness Book of World Records officially recognised this feat. Four of those albums simultaneously occupied spots in the Top 10 in the first week of April of that year. Throughout the '60s, an album or two was issued annually. During this time, Alpert had one solo hit,

Alpert had a fruitful solo career in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Later in his career, Herb Alpert would put out 28 albums, 14 of which would be certified platinum and 15 certified gold. Herb has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and won eight Grammys. To this day, Alpert is the only performer to have a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 with either his singing or his instrument.
