Varner began his professional life in 2012. Sadly, he suffered a cut at the Chiquita Classic to begin his career. He competed on the eGolf and Florida Tour before joining the Web.com Tour in 2014. He qualified for the US Open later that year but also failed to cut there. He excelled in the top 10 performances in 2014 on Web.com, making 13 cuts out of 21 events. He had his best career T-2 result in the Rex Hospital Open. He also participated in the Well Fargo championship and the Northern Trust Open.

He finished in the top 25 five times in 2015. He finished second at the Panama Claro Championship as well. For the 2015–16 seasons, he was the first African American to get a PGA Tour card.
