He joined the Army after high school and was sent to Hawaii. There, he and his wife Norma welcomed their first kid into the world, and he joined an Army-approved country band. He served for four years and ultimately attained the rank of Corporal in the Army. After being discharged with distinction, he went on to earn a degree in agriculture from Southwest Texas State University.

Career

Strait joined Stoney Ridge during his college years, eventually becoming the lead singer and renamed the group The Ace in the Hole Band.
