Early life

Don Wilson was born on September 10, 1954, to a Japanese mother and American father in Alton, Illinois.  In the fall of 1972, Wilson graduated from high school and was accepted into the prestigious Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. Wilson claims that his brother challenged him to a friendly fight, believing he would win since he was more physically and athletically superior to his brother. To his amazement, his brother's martial arts prowess allowed him to be easily pushed around. He attributes this encounter to making him a believer, which led him to study martial arts. For a year, he spent two hours a week with Sensei Chuck Merriman learning Goju-Ryu Karate.

Electrical engineer

Wilson left the academy in 1973 and graduated from Florida's Brevard Community College with an associate's degree in electrical engineering. Then, to the dismay of the older Wilson, he enrolled at his father's alma college, the Florida Institute of Technology, but left early to seek a career in professional fighting. He received Pai Lum Kung-Fu instruction from his brother Jim during this period.
