This film has been the talk of the town ever since the media got to know about the project! “83” is all about the 1983 Cricket World Cup that was won by the Indian cricket team led by captain Kapil Dev. It was a significant moment in the history of India, and the film captured it brilliantly. It was directed by Kabir Khan and written by Khan along with Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and Vasan Bala. Khan and Sumit Arora have penned the dialogues. It has been produced by Deepika Padukone, Kabir Khan, Sheetal Vinod Talwar, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Sajid Nadiadwala, Reliance Entertainment, and 83 Film Ltd. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Adinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa, and R Badree. Initially, Kapil Dev was against the idea
Did you know that Kapil Dev was a bit reluctant about the film at first? According to him, films on real-life events should cover something that happened 50 or 100 years ago, and the 1983 World Cup is only a few decades old, so he thought that it didn’t qualify to be made into a film. He also believed that making a film on the team would make all the members feel old. However, when all the others agreed to the film, Kapil Dev too got convinced and finally said ‘yes.’
Ranveer had to make “drastic changes” to become Kapil Dev
You can imagine how difficult it must have been for Ranveer Singh to portray Kapil Dev in the film. It definitely was not easy for him. He spent ten days with the legend at his home and learned about his bowling style. Ranveer even said that he had to make “drastic changes” in his body mechanics to portray the legend on screen.
Sons of Legends
It must be a proud moment for a son to play the role of his father on screen. In this film, the sons are seen playing their fathers’ roles. Chirag Patil is playing his father, Sandeep Patil. Carl is playing his father, Gordon Greenidge’s role. Also, Mali is playing his father, the late West Indian cricketer who is considered as the greatest fast bowler in Test cricket of the modern era, Malcolm Marshall.
Harrdy Sandhu was actually a cricketer!
Harrdy Sandhu is not just a singer and an actor but also was a cricketer! Yes, he used to be a cricketer. He played at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels. He plays the role of Madan Lal in the film, who was his Under-17 coach at the NCA.
Kapil Dev’s daughter helped in the making of the film
Kapil Dev’s daughter has also contributed to the film. Amiya, who is 25, made her debut as an assistant director in this film. She is the only daughter of the former cricketer. Kabir Khan, the director of the film, revealed how she helped make the film. He said that if they wanted anything to be done by Kapil Dev, they just had to convince Amiya as Dev would never say no to his daughter.
That’s also how they made Kapil Dev do a cameo in the film.
Balwinder Sandhu trained the team
Balwinder Singh Sandhu, former India pacer, was also a huge part of the film. He was the one who trained the whole team and was present during most of the shooting, guiding them and teaching them the tricks of the trade. Not just that, he is also the associate director of the film.
Ranveer’s third real-life character portrayal
Ranveer Singh is known for his charisma and vibrant acting skills. He has given some blockbuster hits in the last few years. And we are damn sure this film too is going to bring him to rave reviews! Deepika and Ranveer’s first film together after marriage
The gorgeous Deepika Padukone is seen in the role of Romi Dev, the wife of Kapil Dev. This is the first time the real-life couple, Ranveer and Deepika, are being seen together in a film after their marriage. Director Kabir Khan admitted that it would be a good marketing strategy to portray the popular couple on screen. However, he also said he would have cast Deepika even if she was not Ranveer’s wife.

This Ranveer-Deepika’s first film together after marriage and their first film together that Sanjay Leela Bhansali does not direct. This is the fourth time the couple will be seen together in a film.
Families of Dev and Padukone have been in contact
For those who didn’t know this, the families of Padukone and Dev have been in close contact already. Prakash Padukone is Kapil Dev’s contemporary in sports. Kapil Dev and his wife had also attended Ranveer-Deepika’s wedding.
Ranveer had to shed kilos for this film
Achieving Kapil Dev’s lean physique in the year 1983 was an extremely difficult task for Ranveer. He weighed 86 kg as he played the role of “Sangram Simmba Bhalerao” in the film “Simmba.” Now, to portray Kapil Dev and get into the character's skin, he had to shed around 12-14kg. And being the dedicated actor that he is, he lost 6 kilos in just 19 days and another 6 in 4 weeks.
Despite his busy schedule, Ranveer makes sure to work out and also follows his diet plan to a T. He also loves swimming and is a great swimmer.
The ‘Moustache’ joke
Dilip Vengsarkar, the former Indian cricketer and administrator, is played by actor Adinath Kothare. Kothare, like Vengsarkar, sports a moustache, and so he joked about how it must have been the moustache that got him the role.
Tahir Raj Bhasin’s third time playing the role of an athlete
Tahir Raj Bhasin plays the role of the legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar in the film. But do you know that this is not the first time he is seen playing the role of a sportsperson? Yes, this actor who made his debut with the film “Mardaani” is playing the role of an athlete for the third time! Before this film, he has played the role of a cricketer in the film “Kai Po Che!” and was also seen in the role of a college athlete in the film “Chhichhore.”
Bhasin steps in the shoes of cricket legend, Sunil Gavaskar
Of course, it is common knowledge that nobody can be like Sunil Gavaskar. And for Tahir Raj Bhasin to portray him was not an easy task. He himself said that he required special training to portray the legend on screen. He had only played street cricket before, so when he started coaching for the film, he learnt that he held the bat the wrong way.
So, he had to learn the right way to hold it and play the game. He had to undergo training for six months to be able to portray Sunil Gavaskar!
Director Khan always had Ranveer in mind for the lead role
There have been rumours that say that actor Arjun Kapoor was one of the choices for the role of Kapil Dev in the film. However, director Kabir Khan revealed that ever since the beginning of the project, it was Ranveer Singh who was in his mind. He even called him “chameleon” because of the actor's versatility. He could easily essay any role assigned to him.
Cricket junkie Sunil Shetty wanted to play Vivian Richards in the film
Actor Sunil Shetty expressed his desire to play the role of West Indian cricketer Vivian Richards. He was inspired to start working on his fitness after meeting the cricketer. Shetty even said that he wanted to play for India but couldn’t. The actor is a huge cricket fan. He said that he would have taken up any role in the film, even if it was small.
Saqib Saleem’s dream has been fulfilled
Actor Saqib Saleem plays the role of former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath in the film. The actor has played Under-19 state-level cricket. In fact, he started his career with cricket and never thought he would become an actor. He feels that his childhood dream of playing cricket for India has been fulfilled through this film.
