"The course, Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity: Identity, the Internet, and European Pop Culture, aims to provide an examination of Styles' music in the context of contemporary cultural and political developments, discussing questions such as gender and sexuality, race, class, nation, and globalism, media, fashion, and fan culture in the wake of the cultural revolution.

Following this revelation, an instructor, Louie Dean Valencia, an associate professor of digital history, published a flier explaining the subject. Aside from his solo albums and One Direction work, Styles is also known for his movies, including Dunkirk, Eternals, Don't Worry Dashing, and My Policeman, which is set to release soon.

In an interview with NBC New York on Tuesday, Valencia said that he has always wanted to teach a history class that is both fun and also covers a period that his students have lived through and can relate to. It's so important for young people to see the things that are important to them reflected in their curriculum through the study of art, activism, consumerism, and fandom around Harry Styles. I think it's so important for young people to be exposed to what is important to them in their curriculum.

As part of the university's Honors College, the course will be offered through the university's Honors Program. To have in-depth conversations, Valencia says classes are capped at 20 students. "The demand for this course is high, and I'd love to teach it to more people."

Student registration begins in the fall, with honors students being able to register early. Students who do not want to pursue honors can apply on the Texas State website. Taking a course inspired by a pop star isn't the first time. Brittany Spanos, a Rolling Stone journalist, taught a Taylor Swift class earlier this year at the Clive Davis Institute at New York University.

Swift's evolution as an artist, pop and country songwriting legacy, the politics of race in contemporary popular music, and more were discussed during the course, which ran from Jan. 26 to Mar. 9. Whether feather boas will be included in the requirements for "Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity" is unknown.
