The American retired basketball player and former president of the NBA Los Angeles Lakers is named Earvin ,Magic, Johnson Jr. In 1979, the Lakers selected Johnson first overall in the NBA draft, after he won championships in high school and college.

Johnson played point guard for the Lakers for 13 seasons.

Johnson is the son of Earvin Sr. and Christine Johnson. He was born on the 14th of August, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan. 

His mother always cleaned their home after work, and his father did janitorial work on a used car lot and garbage collection while never missing a day at General Motors.

When Johnson was drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979, he signed a 25-year, $25 million deal. Johnson achieved outstanding performance during the 1981–82 season, scoring 18.6, 9.6 rebounds, 9.5 assists, and 2.7 steals per game on average. 

During the 1984–85 regular season, he averaged 18.3 points, 12.6 assists, and 6.2 rebounds per game, leading the Lakers to the 1985 NBA Finals.

He continued to exhibit great form over the next few years, averaging 22.5 points, 12.8 assists, and 7.9 rebounds per game in 1988–89.

Then in 1991, a tragic incident changed his life forever. He was diagnosed with HIV. He publicly announced his diagnosis and retired from basketball.

However, he was chosen to represent the US basketball team in the 1992 Summer Olympics. 

He won the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award and a championship. The Basketball Hall of Fame inducted Johnson a second time
