The Young & Restless reunion that fans have been clamoring for so long was so close to happening. Finally, Jack and Phyllis were reunited. Would they stay together? As always, Phyllis messed up everything. And to make matters worse, Jack ended them and lashed out at her viciously, causing many viewers to tune out. We understand their reaction. We know what Jack knows about Phyllis. In the podcast for Soap Opera Digest, Bergman admitted this is not wrong. He explained that's one of the reasons Jack has always been drawn to Phyllis.“Phyllis frustrates him to no end,” said the actor, “but there is something about her that touches his heart.
Everything about her frustrates him to no end. Sometimes, Jack is so busy coughing his words carefully. But she never thinks of doing that. She never considers it. It makes him happy."However, he seems to have a dislike for it as well. There are times when love just ain't enough, as Patty Smyth and Don Henley can remind us. The relationship between Phyllis and Jack did not end," Bergman continued. It became too painful for them, and they stepped away. As a result, they were separated for a while and weren't able to fully reunite, even when they realized they could function as close friends.
But then Jack let his guard down and let Phyllis back in - only to learn that it was all just "an opportunity to stick it to Diane." Bergman acknowledged that his character may have overreacted, "but Jack has been protecting his heart so much, that at the first sign that "Oh, no, it's getting old again," he just couldn't stand it. He admitted that it might have frustrated the audience, but I hope that it had some effect. "I don't want to get hurt again."Phyllis is a unique individual who Jack knows and understands in a way that few others do. Jack loves her regardless - in fact, because of her. But when the going gets tough, that doesn't mean he can handle it. Too many times he has been hurt. Despite his hope that their love could work out, his fear of it never working out drove him away from Phyllis.
Nonetheless, the question remains: Will there ever be any hope for them in the end?“This is the greatest love of Jack's life that he will never be able to forget even when he is with someone else,” Bergman mused to Digest. Well, that "someone else" part doesn't sound very promising... It makes us very wary of where things could go with Diane. Let's have something to hang on to! However, when the actor pondered whether it would ever, truly work out for Phyllis and Jack, or if they would be one of history's great tragic couples, all he could say was, "I'm interested to know as well."Argh. All we can do now is hope for the best. How do you feel about this? Do you think Jack and Phyllis can ever make it?
