Drew Barrymore is happy today after the "crippling terrible" years that followed her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman.

In an interview with news sources that was published on Tuesday, Barrymore, 47, said she felt devastated after her divorce since she had hoped to have a close-knit family with her babies Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8. She and Kopelman ended their relationship amicably, which she described as "cleaner" but "harder and more perplexing."

Her childhood addiction to alcohol served as a coping technique for her. The talk show host claimed, "I was just trying to dull the pain and feel good—and drinking certainly achieved that for me." "For me, drinking was an unchanging constant that you cannot alter. The choices that are best for you cannot be made by you. You keep telling yourself that you'll get things under control, but it keeps outsmarting you."

Barrymore finally realized that she wasn't taking care of herself since she was putting so much effort into protecting her kids. She described the process as "a messy, horrible, awful walk through the fire and come back to life type of trajectory."

The "Charlie's Angels" alum returned to treatment after coming to that revelation, gave up alcohol, and focused on her upcoming daytime TV show, "The Drew Barrymore Show," which premieres in 2020. "My kids gave me the impression like it was game time," Drew said.

She ultimately concluded that Kopelman and Alexandra Michler, who is now his wife, are still a part of Barrymore's family. She noted that we have a terrific family dynamic, which demonstrates that life goes on. "The wonderful thing is that, after all these years, the dream is actually a reality. Simply put, it's not what I was sure would happen."

Barrymore admitted to new sources that, despite all of her difficulties, "this is the most authentic bliss I've ever felt"

"Happiness can be chosen. For it, you must put in the effort. Some days are challenging to reach. Therefore, after you've managed to control it, it feels like such a bigger success "Finally, she said.

Barrymore spoke candidly about the most difficult aspect of her divorce in an interview with Willie Geist on the "Today" show in October 2020.

As a former child star, the actress acknowledged that she is aware that "that was the last thing I wanted to do for my girls from not growing up with any family anything."

Barrymore, who is the daughter of Jaid and John Drew Barrymore, two well-known actors, has been open about the difficulties of growing up in the spotlight. Nevertheless, she expressed hope that her children would continue to enjoy "this amazing family" despite the highly publicized nature of their divorce.

"I think that's why I took (the divorce) so hard," she said to Geist. The final vow I desired to make with (Kopelman) and for (him) was to have this wonderful family, and I found them. However, I thought, "Ugh, there's something not operating that isn't tolerable."

But she acknowledged that discussing her personal issues in public wasn't always simple.

It took her five years to be able to talk clearly, articulately, with hindsight and strength, and to recognize all we did well. "Because it seemed like everything was simply wrong as we were getting divorced. It seems to apply to everyone who believes that something will last forever even though it doesn't."
