67 years old Bruce Willis's family has announced that the actor has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. For now, it has no cure but the BU neurologist says speech therapy and medication have helped some patients with the same disease.
After less than a year his family declared that he has neurological disorder aphasia, his family says his condition has progressed and the famed actor is now diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), earlier this disease was known as Pick's disease, it is a progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the frontal lobe or the brain region underneath the ears and the sad part is, it is currently incurable. This disease creates challenges with speaking and writing.
His family said. " Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of this disease Bruce faces, while this is painful". They said in a statement on Social media, "It is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis". They also expressed their, "deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love". The family also informed that Frontalttemporal dementia is the most common type in people under 60. The statement further said, "Today there is no treatment for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead".
After his diagnosis the fans are heartbroken and wonder if the star of Die Hard will ever be able to shine on the silver screen or not.
Bruce's daughter Rumer Willis also wrote on Instagram;" As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him". The Instagram post was signed by her siblings, Emma the actor's wife with whom he has two daughters, the former wife, Demi Moore, and their three daughters, as his aphasia was affecting his cognitive abilities.
Dozens of people who were on his recent film sets expressed concerns about Bruce's well-being. They stated that the actor in recent years exhibited signs of decline.
What is Frontotemporal Dementia?

This disease is also known as FTD, resulting in damage to the neurons of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain due to the build-up of toxic proteins usually responsible for killing brain cells. The possible results are emotional problems, trouble communicating, unusual behaviors, difficulty with work and walking. Certainly, patients may neglect hygiene, showing resistance and being unaware of the change in their behavior.
Some of the first signs are:
- Change in mood and personality
- Unwillingness to talk
- Lack of social tact
- Repetitive Behaviour
- Sudden weight gain due to overeating
- Unusual physical, verbal, and sexual behaviour
After the diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia people live 8-10 years on average but some live longer. Usually, there are three types of FTD, Primary progressive aphasia (PPA), behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), and dementia associated with movement disorders.
